salcombe fruiters

                        The Salcombe Fruiters were Schooner
                        sailing vessels built in Salcombe
                        and neighbouring Kingsbridge in the
                        1820s-1880s. Small and fast with
copper sheathed hulls and an ability
to sail close to the wind, they were
                        designed to carry highly perishable
cargo of citrus fruits, spices and
                        pineapples from around the world.

They were fitted out with galleries and
grid-like shelves, with plenty of space
between the battens to allow fresh
air to circulate between the precious
                        pineapples and citrus fruits.

“I wanted a name that would reflect The pineapples were picked whilst
the trading history of all the incredible quite green, with care being taken to
fruits and botanicals brought to the ensure side shoots were intact. On the
UK and found ‘Island Queen’, one of passage home the hatchways were
the Salcombe Fruiters, and knew that kept open for ventilation, in all-weather
would be the perfect fit! Using the finest except rain as not one drop of fresh
ingredients, along with Salcombe Gin’s water was allowed in contact with the
exceptional distilling knowledge, I feel fruit, although any amount of spray
we’ve created a gin I’m really proud to or salt water would have no adverse
 put my name to.”
                        effect.
