Stabilization Ponds & Sludge Lagoons
Pond Maintenance
As algae, settled organics and bacteria fall to the bottom of the Pond, a sludge
blanket is formed.
Periodic dredging of the sludge is needed to remove the accumulation to regain
active capacity of the Pond.
Dredging frequency is directly related to the amount of the daily organic loading
to the Pond.
Regular sludge blanket profiles along the length of the Pond will inform the
Operator how deep the sludge blanket has become and where the sludge blanket
is deepest.
Due to the size of most Ponds, sludge blankets are measured from a boat.
