Figure 12.4 A 1-year-old Persian presented for increased respiratory effort and lethargy. On the initial lateral (a) and ventrodorsal
(b) radiographic images, pleural effusion and pulmonary edema were present. The cardiac silhouette is enlarged with dorsal deviation
of the trachea. The pulmonary vasculature (both arterial and venous) appears enlarged. Recheck thoracic images following treatment
for heart failure show the continued enlargement of the cardiac silhouette on the lateral (c) and ventrodorsal (d) images. (e) On M-mode
echocardiography, fractional shortening is normal with thickening noted in the interventricular septum and left ventricular free wall
during diastole. (f) The left atrial size is increased to 1.7 cm. (g) When the mitral valve leaflets are closed, both appear mildly
thickened. Shortening of the free wall leaflet and elongation of the septal leaflet of the mitral valve (h) are seen more easily when
the valves are opened. Mitral dysplasia was diagnosed.
