CYSTOCENTESIS Cystocentesis can be performed on well-behaved dogs in a standing position; the technique is easiest
on large dogs. The skin of the flank is lifted dorsally by an assistant to facilitate visualization of needle insertion site. The
nondominant hand is used to stabilize the bladder while the needle and syringe are controlled by the dominant hand.

                                                A B

CYSTOCENTESIS A, The author prefers to perform cystocentesis with the animal in dorsal recumbency. The
use of a padded V-shaped trough can make this more comfortable for the animal but may require the help
of two assistants for a large dog (one at the front and the other at the back). B, If the bladder is not readily
identified, a trick is to wet the abdomen with a bit of alcohol, and check for the bladder where it pools.
           CYSTOCENTESIS Cystocentesis can be performed
in lateral recumbency. In some animals, it is easier
to palpate and isolate the bladder in lateral than
           dorsal recumbency.
