ALTERNATIVES TO THE PROCEDURE
A fine-needle aspirate uses a regular hypodermic needle, like the ____________________________________
ones used to give vaccines, to take a small number of cells as a
sample from the liver. This can be helpful, especially if liver cancer Witness to consent (printed name)
is a concern. However, aspirates cannot provide the structural
information that is available from liver biopsy (for example, the
fibrosis seen in a biopsy from a cirrhotic liver cannot be identified
in an aspirate sample). Additionally, there is not enough tissue from
an aspirate to perform some of the key tests done on a biopsy,
such as measurement of liver copper levels.
Without the additional information provided by liver biopsy,
we would need to develop a treatment plan without a confirmed
diagnosis, which might lead to a suboptimal outcome.
