VetBooks.ir Suppression of the Immune System

The methods available for suppressing adaptive immune responses
may be classified into two main groups. Older techniques generally

involved treatment that, by inhibiting all cell division, reduced the
response of T and B cells to antigens. This approach is crude and
dangerous since other rapidly proliferating cell populations, such as
intestinal epithelium and hematopoietic stem cells, may also be
severely damaged with potentially disastrous consequences.

Alternatively, it is now possible to selectively eliminate selected
immune cell populations by the use of specific antisera or
monoclonal antibodies or by the use of highly selective

               immunosuppressive drugs.
