vertebrates and invertebrates. Adaptive immunity, in contrast, is
found only in the jawed vertebrates, that is, animals more evolved
than the jawless fish. It has been suggested that the ability to mount
an adaptive immune response depends on the transfer of a
bacterial integrase gene to a vertebrate germ cell through a
transposon.
