Figure A2.19 Abomasum, calf. Clostridial abomasitis. Acute necrotizing abomasitis associated with clos-
tridial infection is an important cause of disease in calves and small ruminants. Predisposing factors include
rapid change in diet, feeding high energy feeds, frozen feed or contaminated milk replacer. Clostridial
infection is often associated with significant gas production resulting in emphysema in affected tissues.
In this image, submucosal emphysema is evident along with other lesions consistent with necrosis and
acute inflammation including ulceration, haemorrhage, and fibrin exudation characteristic of clostridial
infection. The presence of these additional lesions can be used to differentiate significant and post-mortem
emphysema. See also Online figure 10.
A2.10 Necropsy & sample submission
forms
Examples of sampling checklist, sample submis-
sion form and post-mortem form for use in the
laboratory and for field staff are on the follow-
ing pages. Each laboratory should design specific
forms to meet the needs of the area and the labo-
ratory facilities available.
