JAIL DIVISION

Operating the only jail in a county of nearly 600,000 residents can be challenging. With only
572 beds available and over 17,000 annual bookings, keeping the “right” offenders in jail
requires coordination. The capacity of the jail has not increased since 2000, when the county’s
population was just shy of 450,000. We now house more female inmates than the jail was
originally designed for; impacting how we manage the male inmate population. Managing our

inmate population increasingly impacted by mental illness requires innovation and change.
Jail staff collaborates with criminal justice partners to ensure vital bed space is maximized. The
jail is also responsible for providing security to the 16 Circuit Court Judges and courtrooms.
