of prayer-sticks, cloth, baskets, and matting. These
serve to give an idea of the life and arts of the ancient
Americans who left no written record.
When one inquires for a person who, perchance, is
dead, the Hopi say he is shilui, which means, "gone."
On closer inquiry they may tell of the mysterious
journey of the dead, through the sipapu, to the land
of the underworld, which is below the far-off lake.
