Special Message from
Dr. Adisorn Promthep, Director General
of the Department of Fisheries (DOF)
On the occasion of 5th Anniversary of Thai Tuna Industry Association
“Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for
sustainable development” is the Goal 14 of Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) which define a universal goal to establish a strategic framework to protect
the world’s oceans by addressing the adverse impacts of ocean acidification,
overfishing and marine pollution. This can be done by promoting sustainable
use of marine resources through enforcing international legal tools to safeguard-
ing ocean lives.
“Tuna Industry” is an important supplier of food to the world. Tuna are
among the world’s most popular fish and therefore sustaining our fisheries for
future generations is our most important mission. It is widely known that ille-
gal-unreported-unregulated (IUU) catches causes overfishing. Thailand, as part
of the tuna supply chain, reaffirms its commitments to combating IUU Fishing
– as this will also contribute to ensure sustainability in Thai fishing industry
according to SDG Goal 14. In addition, as renown as “kitchen of the world”,
Thailand also emphasises on “food safety policy” especially in the process of
food production that meet requirements of international standards.
“Thai Tuna Industry Association” is therefore a key force that drives such
policies into action. On the occasion of the 5th anniversary that the Thai Tuna
Industry Association has been established and operated, as a representative of
Department of Fisheries, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my
heartiest congratulations, and my appreciation to the Association’s efforts in driv-
ing Thai tuna industry’ practices to reach the world standards. I do hope that
we will continue to join hands in promoting sustainable food industry in the
future.
Mr. Adisorn Promthep
Director General, Department of Fisheries
