“Encourage flexible working pra ices (already in place among most government organisa ons).
From flexible to diverse and inclusive
One of the most common answers to our question – how can more women be encouraged to work in rail – was to provide more flexibility. Answers included:
“Wouldn’t drive trains because of the la of comfort stops. I struggled when I was breast feeding. It was okay when I was in the office, but I really struggled when I had to go out in the field. How was I supposed to pump when I was in the field all day?
“Provide flexible work arrangements.
“ e GM of HR at my company quit her job because of the travel component and she couldn’t make it work with her home life. And she was head of HR.
“Provide work life balance – I get a day to work om home – organisa ons need to accommodate personal circumstances to a ra women.
