Although Newcomb is sparsely populated, it benefits from a forward thinking school system.

Newcomb Central School not only provides elementary and secondary educational services for

the Town, it also serves as a community center. As of 2009, there are 82 students, including

five (10) international students, enrolled at the school and there are a total of fifteen (15)
teachers. As such, the teacher to student ratio is one (1) to five (5), whereas New York State’s

average teacher to student ratio is one (1) to fourteen (14). In addition to teachers, the school

has nine (9) other professional staff, including assistant teachers, a special

part‐time speech teacher, and a physician assistant. The school also has

The School District’s total local tax revenue for the 2008‐2009 school year

While the State of New York is seeking to consolidate school districts with less than 1,000

students, Newcomb Central School is seeking to expand through several initiatives including its

international student program and the housing of non‐residential students. Over the past few
years Newcomb hass welcomed adults and students from Russia, Iraq, Israel, China, Germany,

France, South Korea, Switzerland, Sweden, Brazil, Bangladesh, Japan, and Australia. Newcomb

Central School’s programs have been recognized on television, radio, and the newspaper.

Currently Newcomb is actively pursuing a change in the Federal Immigration law to allow F‐1

tuition paying international students to attend a public school for their entire high school

experience. If such changes were to occur, the school would seek to develop dormitory type

housing in order to ssupport the significant expansion of the international program.

Thanks to a partnership with North Country Community College, Newcomb Central School has a

program that allowing most students to graduate with 30‐40 college credits. The high school

teachers are also adjjunct professors at North Country. Newcomb Central School is thus able to

l
e
meet the requiremeents of both high school and college. This unique program gives students a

e
s
real advantage when they leave for college. There are many other distinctions that separating

Newcomb Central School from most other schools including foreign language in PK‐12,

SmartBoards in all classrooms, a physician assistant allowing diagnosis and treatment, distant
