RESPIRATORY
CARE
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
2 YEARS
This program is designed to prepare
graduates with demonstrated
competence in the cognitive
(knowledge), psycho motor (skills),
and affective (behavior) learning
domains of respiratory care practice
as performed by registered respiratory
therapists (RRTs). The curriculum is
directly related to career standards and
employment opportunities. Instruction
includes both lab and classroom
situations with an emphasis on clinical
components.
Respiratory therapists apply scientific
principles to prevent, identify, and
treat acute or chronic dysfunction
of the cardiopulmonary system.
Their knowledge of the scientific
principles underlying cardiopulmonary
physiology and pathophysiology, as
well as biomedical engineering and
technology, enable them to effectively
assess, educate, and treat patients with
cardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory
therapists are involved in many
specialty areas such as: Adult Intensive
Care; Neonatal and Pediatric ICU;
Pulmonary Function Laboratory; Sleep
Laboratory; Home Care; Rehabilitation;
Ground and air critical care transport.
The Fort Hays Tech | Northwest Respiratory
Care program is in alignment with the
National Center for Education Statistics
(NCES) CIP code 51.0908: Respiratory
Care Therapy/Therapist. A program that
prepares individuals, under the supervision
of physicians, to assist in developing
respiratory care plans, administer respiratory
care procedures, supervise personnel and
equipment operation, maintain records,
and consult with other health care team
members. Includes instruction in the
applied basic biomedical sciences; anatomy,
physiology, and pathology of the respiratory
system; clinical medicine; therapeutic
procedures; clinical expressions; data
collection and record-keeping; patient
communication; equipment operation and
maintenance; personnel supervision; and
procedures for special population groups.
