COOKING & NUTRITION
Meal prepping for older Australians
Meal prepping is not a new concept, it simply means preparing several meals in advance to save time and help you to enjoy a healthy diet.
Meal prepping can either be done for yourself or a loved one, for example an elderly parent. This will reassure you that they are getting the nutrients they need.
If you have noticed a change in your appetite, it is important to understand why, as missing meals can lead to malnutrition and cause health issues down the track.
Cooking for one, with or without a change
in appetite can require motivation. If you have meal prepped, you won’t even have to think about cooking, simply reheat and eat!
Suggestions for meal prepping:
•Set aside one day a week to cook several meals.
•Pack food in microwave-safe containers.
•Label the containers with the contents, which day it is to be eaten and how to reheat the food.
•Slightly undercook the food. Overcooked, mushy food is not appetising!
• Store the dishes correctly and reheat them thoroughly when it is time to eat. This will preserve the nutrition and flavour of the dish.
•Develop a meal plan that incorporates your favourites.
•Supplement or replace an ingredient to ensure the meal is even more nutritious.
• Occasionally add a new recipe or alter the recipe. For example, change the side dish, swap the protein, or serve with a fresh salad.
• Share a meal. When possible eat with a loved one for company and socialisation. The meal will always taste better when you share it.
