Praying Hands Ranch was started in 1987 by Carl and Shirley Hansen on the eastern edge of Parker, Colorado. Their son Jon had special needs and had an affinity for horses. They set up the ranch to be a therapeutic riding facility for Jon and others with disabilities so they too may experience the joy and benefits that riding a horse can bring.
In 2014, Wanjiru Mukunga, raised in Gitombo, Kenya, left the safety and security of chaplain job in Colorado to return to her home village of Gitombo to erect a temporary shack to house a kindergarten with 3 students. Currently that school, PAAV Community School, has grown to serve over 150 children in grades preschool thru 6th grade. To relieve hunger and ensure clean water, a well was dug and a meal program started. PAAV began to grow their own food and purchased a cow so the children would have milk. As a result, the children take porridge with milk in the morning and eat a balanced lunch. But PAAV Community School offers more than academics. In a village overwhelmed with hunger and despair, PAAV offers a sanctuary for hope and identify for the children, employment for the parents and grandparents, support for special needs students, transformational business training and micro loans for fathers.
