JOHN MCGIRL
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka with Pastor Dixie Laube officiating. Burial was in the Kahoka Cemetery.
Last month, we looked at Preparedness and Mitigation – how to prepare for a disaster and how to lessen the effects of a disaster on our lives. This month, I wanted to talk a little about the Response and Recovery aspects of a disaster – What happens when the disaster happens?
What I really want to focus on, is how the community affects recovery efforts. Recovery varies greatly from disaster to disaster based off location, type of disaster and specific effects from that incident, but ultimately, when a disaster ends at the local level, it is us as citizens who bring the community back to normal. Recovery can include mucking out flood debris from a home, cleaning up debris from a windstorm, home demolition and rebuilding from tornados and floods to many other things – the purpose of recovery is to return a community back to a new normal, and hopefully set them up for success when the next disaster happens. Recovery can take the form of locals with chainsaws clearing debris, to farmers with tractors and heavy equipment clearing paths, to feeding and sheltering those affected by the disaster and those who come into our community to help us recover from a disaster.

Mark lived a happy and simple life with his wife, who was his true love. They moved to rural Luray where he loved being in the country caring for his property and spending time in his shop.
