B. Airborne precautions
1. Diseases
a. Measles
b. Chickenpox (varicella)
c. Disseminated varicella zoster
d. Pulmonary or laryngeal tuberculosis
2. Barrier protection
a. Used for clients known or suspected to
be infected with pathogens transmitted
by the airborne route.
b. Single room is maintained under
negative pressure; door remains closed
except upon entering and exiting.
c. Negative airflow pressure is used in the
room, with a minimum of 6 to 12 air
exchanges per hour via high-efficiency
particulate air (HEPA) filtration mask
or according to agency protocol.
d. Ultraviolet germicide irradiation or
HEPA filter is used in the room.
e. Health care workers wear a respiratory
mask (N95 or higher level). A surgical
mask is placed on the client when the
client needs to leave the room; the
client leaves the room only if
necessary.
