Procedure for Sterile Dressing Change and Wound
Irrigation*

▪ Verify the prescription for the procedure in the medical record.
▪ Anticipate supplies that will be needed and gather supplies, including personal
protective equipment (PPE) and additional equipment needed for protection
(i.e., gown, face shield, clean and sterile gloves), a sterile dressing change kit if
available, and any anticipated additional supplies such as gauze pads, drain
sponges, cotton-tipped applicators, tape, an abdominal pad, a measuring tool,
syringe for irrigation, irrigation basin, extra pair of sterile gloves, and underpad.
▪ Introduce self to client, identify the client with 2 accepted identifiers and
compare against the medical record, provide privacy, and explain the
