I can still remember the imam asking me, "Are you sure you want to embrace Islam?"
"Yes," I replied. Then he insisted, "Even if this means it will be written in your passport
that you are a Muslim?" I said, "Even so." Then he said, "If you are sure that is what you
want, then repeat after me, "I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except
Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." I made the testimony in
English and then in Arabic by repeating it after the imam, thereby taking the final step to
Islam.
