Questions- What sorts of tasks do you have that you can break down into smaller bits? When have you used this in the past?
Vacation- Sometimes the best way to remain present is to get away from the difficult moment for a few minutes. Take a break from responsibilities and get outside, get away from the source of stress, and give yourself a breather. Sometimes a vacation lasts only 10 minutes, sometimes it might be part of a day. The important thing is to get out in a planful way that ensures effectiveness.
Question- What does ‘taking a break from responsibilities’ mean for you? How can you do this in a short period of time?
Encouragement- Give yourself positive messages, encouraging statements that push you to resist urges to give up, affirmations, and inspirational phrases. The best encouragements are the ones that challenge you when you are feeling down or struggling with managing your symptoms.
Question- What do you tell yourself to push through difficult moments? What inspirational words or phrases help you?
Self Soothe
Making use of our five senses can help us to gain a feeling of serenity, peacefulness, and calm. By focusing and attending to these different sensations we can feel more relaxed, let go of stress, and help regulate our own emotions. By using our Vision we can look at pleasant images, take in the beauty of nature, or observe pleasant moments. Hearing allows us to attend to soothing music that can take our mind away from stress, listen to the sounds of the world around us that are natural and peaceful, and find comfort in the rhythms of our surroundings. Scent is one of the most powerful senses, and it can help us remember more calm times, make use of aromatherapy, or take in the smells of rain, grass or the earth. Taste is a scent that, when used in moderation, can give comfort through pleasant foods, provide contrast with sharp tastes, and allow for a calming experience. Touch is an often-used sense to self soothe through soft, pleasant sensations of texture, or through the feeling of massage or pressure.
Questions- Of the five senses, which helps you feel soothed? What do you use to feel more soothed? What sorts of things do you carry with you that you can use to calm yourself?
