Self- Soothing (SS) is:
Use the 5 senses!
Vision—I can use my eyes to look at: Scenic images Nature
The stars
Hearing—I can use my ears to listen to: Music The rain
Smell—I can use my nose to smell: Candles Fresh baked cookies
Taste—I can use my mouth to taste: Hot chocolate Gum/mint
Touch—I can use my body to feel:
Silly Putty / Play Doh A soft, warm blanket
Pictures
My favorite movie Shampoo/body wash Hard candy Lotion on my skin
Art Silence Fresh cut grass Chocolate
A bubble bath
Distress Tolerance SELF-SOOTHE
comforting relaxing
being kind & gentle to oneself—I deserve it!
doing things that feel good
Self- Soothing is NOT:
jolting the senses
continuing to be hard on myself
avoiding life
overusing one sense that it becomes problematic—overeating, etc.
