29. What is meant by resistant hypertension?
A patient is said to have resistant hypertension when he
fails to attain his target blood pressure even after adhering
to optimal doses of an appropriate concurrent three drug
antihypertensive regimen that includes a diuretic.
Pseudoresistance is the most common form of
treatment resistance seen in clinical practice. It implies
absence of true resistance to drugs. It is due to either
blood pressure measurement errors, poor adherence to
treatment or white-coat effect.
