The Driver's Guide
Leaving the hustle and bustle of Dublin, the countryside north of the city offers some beautiful, unspoiled shores, elegant castles, wildlife preserves and stunning views. Heading into County Meath you will enter the Boyne Valley, which is considered the cradle of Irish history and civilisation. Among the remarkable sites in this rolling river valley are the Boyne Battlefield; the Monastery of Monasterboice, High Cross and Round Tower; the Hill of Slane, where St Patrick announced the arrival of Christianity; and the world famous Stone Age Passage Tombs of Newgrange. Travelling further into County Louth and onto Monaghan, a plethora of ancient monuments, castles and picturesque towns, villages and landscapes await. A journey filled with tranquil beauty spots, where history and legends meet.
