In Memoriam `
`
This year the Academy of General Dentistry lost one of its most distinguished leaders,
Dr. Stanley Markovits. Stan was a dedicated husband, father, practitioner, and
educator. He was survived by his children (Gary Markovits and Robin Jenson),
grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His commitment to his family was admirable
and served as a guide to many friends and to many members of the Academy. He
graduated from the NYU College of Dentistry and practiced privately for 53 years.
Stan served on the NYSAGD Board of Trustees for over 50 years. He rose to the Presidency
of the National AGD and served on many committees and boards within both the AGD
and the ADA, including President of the Ninth District Dental Society of the ADA. He
was a Fellow and Master in the AGD. Among his many honors were the Distinguished
Service Award of the AGD, the NYSAGD Meritorious Service Award, the Thaddeous
Weclew Honorary Fellowship, and the NYSAGD Lifetime Achievement Award.
He served as a Clinical Professor of Reconstructive and Comprehensive Dentistry at NYUCD, Chairman of Problem
and Handicapped Services at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Manhattan Hospital and Polyclinic, Chairman of Handicapped
Services at Jewish Memorial, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dental Hygiene at North Bergen
Community College, the Department of Chairman of Periodontics at Jewish Memorial Hospital, and President of
the Academy of Oral Medicine.
Dr. Stan lectured both nationally and internationally. He lectured at over 15 universities and every major dental
meeting. In addition, he published many articles as well as the Quintessence textbook on implant dentistry. As a
member of the original Sponsor Approval Program and the subsequent CERP committee, he helped to form some of
the initial structure of the AGD.
He was a role model to many of us and will be sorely missed.
