Background: Medical students (MS) (new track: NT) at Phrae Hospital Medical Education
Center are MS who have completed a B.S. in health sciences with a min of 2 years working
experience in government agencies. Individual MS have a variety of learning behavior in
order to gain knowledge, understanding of the lesson and applying knowledge to the
exam. The present study was aimed to evaluate leaning behavior factors, self-preparation
techniques and the attitude toward of the OSCE: NL3. In order to find the factors that are
beneficial for MS to be able to successfully pass the exam.
Summary of Work: Study population included 73 MS at Phrae Hospital Medical Education
Center during 2014 – 2018. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. The data were
analyzed by Percentage, Chi-square, Gamma, T-Test, and Multiple Regression.
Summary of Results: Found that there were no factors associated with passing OSCE: NL3
of MS because MS had similar demographic characteristics. But found an interesting point is
the number of times in the exam has a significant relationship with the GPA ( =7.602) in
the opposite direction ( =-1.000) by MS with GPA3.00 will pass all first time (70.8%), but
MS with GPA3.00 (4.2%) must take more than one exam and a significant relationship with
learning behavior ( =3.987) in the same direction ( =0.792). In addition, the average
level of self-preparation techniques which passed for the first times is significantly different
from the MS who have taken the exam more than 1 times (T =2.432).
Discussion: The number of times in the exam has a significant relationship with GPA and
learning behavior by time management ( =8.424) and the anxiety of learning ( =6.311).
The significantly different of the average level of self-preparation techniques are from
review the content to prepare for the exams (=0.235), reading books really hard when
closer examination period (=0.225), and Read English textbooks regularly (=0.159).
Howsoever there should be a study to find the factors and methods of development to
make every medical student pass the exam at the first time that the exam is taken.
Conclusions: There were no factors associated with passing OSCE: NL3 exam of MS but
found that the number of times in the exam has a significant relationship with GPA and
learning behavior and there are differences of the average level of self-preparation
techniques for exams of MS at Phrae Hospital Medical Education Center.
Take home message: Learning behavior and exam preparation are important to OSCE: NL3
Key words: OSCE: NL3, the exam passing, the number of times in the exam
