Th e Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter provides a safe,
temporary home for animals as they make the transition
from one owner to the next. Th e shelter’s new building
is the fi rst animal shelter in PA that is registered with the
USGBC and is a LEED Silver building. Th is single story
structure is designed with 58 dog dens, 57 cat condos
and several smaller animals enclosures.

Th e project team used a minimum footprint, reusing
most of the existing infrastructure and ensuring the
conservation of the natural terrain surrounding the
site. Rainwater harvesting has been designed be reused
to clean the dogs’ living quarters and will help to
reduce the size of the retention pond. Architecturally,
the shelter is designed to blend in with the local
environment. Th e exterior of the building will feature
natural earth tone colors. Th e windows and trim are
green in color and contain a high amount of recycled
material. Th e white roof refl ects heat away from the
building, a benefi t for the summer months.
