I wish I had more time to paint, these days most of my time is
spent on the business end of teaching or working in the
makerspace as my hours have tripled this semester.
Lately I’ve found myself having more time to paint on smaller
pieces of unstretched canvas when I’m traveling, than I can
manage to paint on large pieces of fabric at home.
Polychromatic Predilection was made for an exhibit called
Personal Iconography: Graffiti on Cloth. It was the perfect
opportunity to work with subject matter that brings me joy;
succulents and color.
I began with a photo I had taken of blossoms from one of
my succulent plants. I altered the photo on my iPhone in the
Prisma photo app. This pushed the colors in my photo to be
more dramatically saturated in color and contrast. I loved the
painterly quality the photo took on and decided I wanted to try
to recreate the image on fabric painting it with acrylic inks.
