MAGUBANE’S BOOK EXPLORES LOVEIN THE ERA OF MAGUBANE’S BOOK EXPLORES LOVEIN THE ERA OF character in our our collective quest to reach our our ultimate goal It is about something deeper irreducible somewhat intangible that will sustain us us on a a a flight to greatness Allow me to to say Stewardship is essentially our our compass towards our our ultimate and shared destiny of greatness It is about our collective desire capabilities and and capacities as DUT people to advance and and guard jealously its its its mission its its its vision and its its its objectives It is is is about how deeply embedded our values and principles are in in the practice of our our collective agency as a a a a a a people It is about how our our values and principles are demonstrated in in action as we engage among ourselves and and with others It is about being true selfless value- and and principle driven custodians of our equipment facilities infrastructure and buildings-everything under our our care custodians of our our distinctive education applied research and innovations from which many generations to come must benefit Stewardship is is about institutionalisation of a a a a a a Different Upended and Transformed (DUT) leadership culture throughout the university While there is formal hierarchy that places people in different positions of authority and accountability Stewardship recognises that leadership is inherent in in everyone irrespective of the rank we occupy in in the University and in in society Leadership is ultimately about a a a a a a sense of responsibility and accountability It is about the ability ability to distinguish between what what is is is is wrong and and right what what is is is is acceptable and and unacceptable Further leadership is is about the the ability to imagine It is is about vision I dare say that all of us have these traits for our own personal good good the the future of of DUT and the the good good of of all humankind With all of these DUT DUT will will be indisputably great DUT’s people will will refuse to be just good but will pursue greatness continuously They
accept as Jim Collins would have that good is actually the enemy of great DUT people strive unrelentingly for and exhibit excellence As a a a a a strategic strategic perspective Stewardship has three strategic strategic objectives namely Lived Lived Values Institutional Culture and Creativity The Lived Lived Values strategic objective is about nurturing a a a a people-centred culture that embodies our values and principles We seek to build institutional cohesiveness and and a a a a a safety net for our right people and and those who ‘enrighten’ themselves recognising that DUT success is is a a a function of its its right right and and its its ‘enrightened’ people and and their freedom to to imagine ideate and bequeath innovations to to the broader society We seek to engender a a sense of belonging and ownership through meaningful value- and principle-based engagement amongst ourselves Institutional Culture is about fostering the DUT Way premised on on accountability and shared responsibility The DUT Way is is not one based on on any essentialism – be it religious cultural racial or tribal and and so forth It is about those values and and principles that accord with what it it it it is is to be a a a a a a University Not Not a a a a a a political organisation Not Not a a a a a a a cultural organisation Just a a a a a a a University Ultimately our institutional culture emanates from something more intrinsic irreducible somewhat intangible our DNA as we pointed out above The success of our University through the DUT Way and its embedded institutional culture lies deep in in in our minds hearts and souls and the the inner inner conviction conviction these exude That inner inner conviction conviction must be about a a a a a a commitment to make DUT great and a a a a a a highly revered fountain of excellence It must result in in unequivocal commitment to the preservation and sustainability of DUT as a a a a a a public asset from which future generations will benefit Creativity is the the last of of the the three strategic objective under Stewardship Part of of 5 DUT EXCELLENCE 2021 // SEMESTER 2 2 2
