MAGUBANE’S BOOK EXPLORES LOVEIN THE ERA OF
As already mentioned, the DUT LV Framework, which has been developed with staff and students, is extremely important in ensuring that the ways we work together are consistent with our values and principles. They set out clearly the type of behaviours that we believe everyone who works with or for DUT need to exhibit, irrespective of role.
The Framework also sets out examples of the standards we must achieve if we are to develop the environment and reputation that retain and support existing staff and students, and attract the best people in the future, whether they work or study at our University. Living our values and principles is a means to move DUT and its people from “good” to “great”.
Our Lived Values Framework provides a common language which helps us to talk about ‘how’ we do things at DUT as well as ‘what’ we do and it helps us frame conversations on individual and team performance and development. It assists to bring consistency across DUT on how we work and can aid collaborative team working. It can help clarify the role and behaviours of our people and their input to the student experience, innovative teaching and learning practises, our research agenda and many other institutional objectives.
Our behaviour statements are both realistic and aspirational, describing how we live our values and principles on our best days: some we achieve easily, others may need effort, training, or support before we can regularly attain them and get them embedded to second nature.
You can use the ENVISION2030 Lived Values Framework to help you, your colleagues, and your team to provide a consistently excellent educational experience for our students, a quality service to our colleagues, stakeholders and partners, offer valuable and innovative research and consultancy to our communities and realise our tagline “Creative. Distinctive. Impactful.”
The DUT LV Framework also offers a positive tool for self-assessment, reflection and development. It offers a professional development direction towards which all staff and students should be working if we are to meet the challenges as set out in ENVISION2030. Our Lived Values embody how we undertake our strategic objectives and are vital to the success of our strategy and DUT itself. The DUT LV Framework must sit at the heart of our research, teaching, innovation and entrepreneurial activities, guiding our behavior as a community and as individuals within that community, equally for everyone at DUT.
By defining our values and principles and associated behaviours and embedding them in our daily working lives we can better understand what is expected of us, recognize positive behaviour and actively address poor conduct. This will enable us to achieve the level of excellence to which we aspire and will support our ambition to deliver impact to society through our work and, thus, contribute to the improvement of lives and livelihoods in our broader society.
Indeed, our Values and Principles are not just words on a page, they’re interwoven into all aspects of DUT and sit at the very heart of all our work. Our Values and Principles guide us to be the employer and educator we want to be, one that is people-centred and engaged, one that is innovative and entrepreneurial, and it allows our people to thrive.
May all members of the DUT People internalise these associated behaviours. They are exactly what we need to make DUT Different, Upended and Transformed. They are what we need to be truly Creative. Distinctive. Impactful.
