Once I have a character I like that fits the form, I build the

             armature.


             If I’m designing something like a drum, I cut a piece of card stock
             the same size as the outside of the paper tube I’m going to use for

             my drum. The tube will grow slightly larger after the paperclay has
             been applied, so be sure to add a little play in your design. You can
             sketch your design on the piece of card stock or you can create a

             very in-depth pattern in Photoshop.


             When I’m doing a complex design, I print two copies of the pattern

             to scale on card stock and use one as reference and the other as a
             guide for sketching the pattern on the “canvas” with watercolor
             pencils.


             Once you have your design, you’re ready to build your armature.
