A stormy history characterizes the Brothers’ Hockey team. Not since the Icemen last went to the sectionals have they met with the kind of success that this season has handed them. The odd thing is that the team’s talent is not substantially different from the past two disappointing seasons. Whatever the combination of factors which has enabled the team to outskate their opponents, one thing is clear: tbe team obviously works well together. Their 14-1
regular season record certainly proved that.
The team, which is ranked eleventh in the state, found their most formidable opponent in Rome Catholic, who handed the leers their lone loss. Interestingly enough, that 5-2 early season loss was reversed when the Brothers had a dramatic rematch against Rome at the Coliseum. It was at that game that defenseman Kevin Burdick per formed his hat trick and the squad outscored Rome in the final minutes — in spite of a powerplay that left the Broth ers with only three men on the ice to defend Rookie Goal-
tender, Marty Coyne. The squad then faced arch-rival Bishop Ludden in a comparatively easy 4-1 contest. Soph omore Tom Lynn was a crucial factor for the Brothers as he fired two quick goals early into the second period only thirty seconds apart. With this type of hardhitting offense and tightly knit defense, the Brothers held the Gaelic Knights to one goal in two meetings.
It was evident by season’s end that the combination of Captains Pete Taylor and Kevin Burdick, along with Seniors Paul Hanrahan, Bob Walsh, and Eric Schneid, with Jason Klein in goal, that Coach Mike Gagliardi will have to rely heavily on his Sophomore line to fill some pretty big holes.
