League play was disappointing for the Varsity Hoop- sters for much of the same reason that has frustrated the other varsity sports this year — the disintegration of the CNYCL. While the Basketball team was not faced with a single elimination contest, it did have to face a difficult
schedule as a result of the reorganization of the league. In spite of these difficulties the squad accomplished a 10-8 overall record.
Led by Captains Tom Sommers, Derek McCarthy and Chris Fletcher, the Brothers were able to score in
critical situations. McCarthy, who was team MVP, sparked the squad to a win in the first game against Ludden. The Brothers were not so fortunate in the second Ludden contest. It was in that game that the Gaelic Knights were out for revenge in the last ever CNYCL game. The game was unevenly played as Ludden grabbed a quick lead and maintained it for most of the game. It wasn’t until the third period when the Brothers went man for man on defense that we were able to break the Ludden offensive strategy. Still, it was too little, too late for CBA as Ludden rolled to a 59-51 win.
It was somewhat similar in other contests such as both
Henninger games where the Varsity Hoopsters played hard but allowed victory to elude them. There were peak moments, though, such as the first Fowler contest where the Brothers led 28-26 at the half. The league leaders dominated in the second half, however. Corcoran was yet another example of the skill of the Brothers. Facing a deficit of eleven points at the half, contributions by forward Dave Centore and Mike Herring at guard enabled the squad to come back and win by two. Coach Jim Lee can expect that a combination of the experience of his youn ger team members and several members of the JV pro gram should produce a more promising season next year.
