Varsity Batmen Slide into Playoffs
Heavy rains and sloppy fields that never seemed to dry completely made the Brothers’ Miners’ task of reaching the end of season playoffs a Herculean effort.
Under the leadership of Coach Tom Dotterer and the MVP’S Don McClure and Bob Walsh, the squad devel oped a consistent and balanced attack which enabled them to outlast teams which at face value, appeared to have stronger records and more experience. Of critical importance to the team’s performance was the rotation of its pitching staff of Pat Conole, Bill Flynn and Jim Ste-
i( phens. Stephens, who sat out his sophomore year be cause of back injuries, demonstrated a versatility that caught more than one opposing batter off guard. Con- ole’s previous stellar performance as a freshman pitcher was an important asset in his second year on the team
since several close contests came down to the last pitch. This was particularly evident in the Ludden and Henninger games where several key mistakes almost cost the Broth ers their upper hand.
In any event the season witnessed several satisfying accomplishments — among which numbered blanking Nottingham 3 games to none, reaching the sectionals and placing third in Cities League Competition. While the single elimination loss to Fulton in the first round of sectional play frustrated the Miners’ hopes for a title, it was nonetheless clear that highly talented players such as outfielders Matt Giblin, Ken Sharkey and Paul O’Leary, first baseman Kevin Burdick and shortstop Joe Pullano would provide the depth for an improved season next spring.
