It was a bitter sweet season for the
Varsity Brothers Gridders as hopes
for a Dome bid and possible Section III
playoff berth characterized regular
season play. A stellar senior line-up
headed by All-City Co-captain Billy
Owens and Steve Coker, Don
Parks, John Fitzgerald, Jamie
Beeks and Quarterback Don Mc­
Clure, suggested that Coach Robert
Campbell’s squad could have one of
its best seasons in years. Ten years
was the actual count as the team
rolled in a 7-1 record. What made
their performance less than sweet
was the fact that the gradual breakup
of the CNYCL, caused by the with­
drawal of Auburn and Watertown,
forced the Brothers and the Black
elimination contest for the Cities
Crown. That lone loss to Henninger
cost the squad the Crown, the Dome
and the Sectional playoff berth. The
game itself was a close one as both,
teams — evenly matched, according,
to some observers — squared off.
