Page 11 - Florida Concealed Carry Law
P. 11
Like many of you reading this book, I’m a veteran, gun owner and ardent Second Amendment supporter. I’m also a trusts and estates attorney who helps clients throughout Florida create both simple and complex firearms trusts. I also help clients understand how Florida and federal gun laws affect them in certain situations. So, I was pleased to read Ryan’s book about Florida’s concealed carry laws.
Carrying a concealed deadly weapon is a huge responsibility. You must have a good understanding of federal and Florida gun laws - in addition to constantly undergoing extensive firearms training. And, of course, you must be aware of your own personal hot buttons, and your own personal limitations.
When I first applied for my Florida concealed weapon license, I legally bypassed the training requirement by producing my DD-214. I soon realized I’d made a big mistake. Yes, I understood the basics of gun handling, and as a lawyer who practices in gun law, I knew the laws. But what little training I had in the military was decades ago, and I didn’t really know the practical consequences of Florida’s laws.
So, I took a concealed carry course from a local instructor, and the light bulb went off. Having in-person instruction from a knowledgeable professional put everything into perspective as to the “real-world” situations. Since then, I have furthered my knowledge and experience by taking additional courses and instruction, and by reading everything I can find on the subject of gun use and gun laws. I learn something new every time.
