Fleet 4 Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island
Narragansett Bay, 1963
Fleet Captain: Gary Smith
Our racing season continued with our Summer Solstice and Dog Days series out
of the Wickford Yacht Club.
We are down to just two boats racing now in our fleet, Storm Petrel and Miss
Jenn, so we continued racing in the Cruising class, utilizing the Narragansett Bay
PHRF ratings for an Ensign. There were 9 boats registered in the cruising group
of very different styles and sizes.
Starts continue to be an adventure with the variety of larger boats. Best laid
plans don’t always work out and it’s harder to get clear air. However, the
Ensigns continue to prevail and save their time.
We had 5 races scored in the Solstice series. One race was thrown out due to a
mix up with which government mark competitors were to round.
Both Ensign’s missed one race and after one throw out Miss Jenn finished 1st
with 4 points and Storm Petrel 2nd with 9.5 points, winning a tie breaker.
In the second half of our summer, the Dog Days, we got in all 6 scheduled races.
Storm Petrel was unable to compete in this series, leaving Miss Jenn all alone
with the big boys, saving her time and pulling out a 1st place. Narragansett Bay
certainly provides great sailing conditions from Spring through the Fall for
cruising destinations, day sailing or racing.
We worked on re-fastening some floorboards this past fall on Miss Jenn, as I
keep saying I’ll do the work in the spring and never do. Thoughts for next year
continue on. Go Easy and enjoy your sailing season.
