party or regatta. The publicity almost certainly would have a positive
effect.
The class needs new boat construction. Although most Ensigns can be
rebuilt and could still be sailing for another sixty years, we hear of boats
being abandoned or destroyed every year. Without new boats, the class
will continue to shrink. Perhaps the ECA can afford to keep a new hull in
the mold to strengthen and preserve both (the hull and mold), awaiting
the eventuality of the commissioning of a new boat.
The ECA and Ensign Spars are working together for the combined
success of both. In addition to written correspondence on the website
Forum, perhaps a ‘hotline’ or a ‘chat line’, manned by knowledgeable
Ensign Class volunteers could assist with repairs, maintenance, projects
and consultation.
Given the chance, the Ensign sells itself. An attractive Ensign in good
condition will always be an eye-catcher, and taking others for an
enjoyable sail is a really fun and effective way to grow the class. A
couple of “Take a Friend Sailing” days this sailing season would be great
additions to the fleet calendar.
I invite you to join me in the ongoing effort to build and strengthen the
Ensign class.
