food coloring in the first bowl, 7 drops green in the second, and 3 to
4 drops yellow in the last.
9 Use a sharp knife to lightly cut an 8-inch circle in the center of the
cookie 2 inches from the edge. Spread the pastel green frosting into
a flat layer over the circle. This will leave a 2-inch-wide circle of the
cookie uncovered with frosting. Transfer the regular green frosting to
a piping bag fitted with a large round tip and pipe two concentric
circles over the exposed area to cover it. Lightly spread flat with a
frosting knife to smooth over the edges. Transfer the remaining
regular green frosting to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip and
pipe four equidistant vertical lines across the pastel green circle in
the center. Transfer the yellow frosting to a piping bag fitted with a
small round writing tip. Pipe two large dots of frosting midway down
the outer border, directly across from each other. This will separate
your two lines of text. Pipe the words “The road goes ever on and
on” across the top half of the border and “Down from the door where
it began” across the bottom half. You can lightly trace the letters with
a toothpick beforehand to be sure you write the letters small enough
to fit. Use your remaining yellow frosting to pipe a 1½-inch circle in
the center of the cookie and pipe Gandalf’s rune in the lower right-
hand corner of the door (it looks like an “F” with the two arms slanted
upward).
