The National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc
& Dr. J. Owens Academy of Fine Arts, Inc. present
The 2018 NANM Scholarship
Competition for Winds and Percussion
As an organization that embraces the arts, the Dr. J. Owens
Academy has joined forces with the National Association
of Negro Musicians (NANM) to establish a local branch.
NANM's Southeastern Region includes the following states:
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
Each year NANM extends invitation to collegiate students
to apply for a scholarship competition for outstanding
musicians. The 2018 Scholarship Competition is for Winds
and Percussion. Each year, NANM focuses on a different
area: Strings and Harp in 2017, Voice in 2016, and Piano
in 2015. The Owens Academy will have hosted the local
NANM branch competition on Saturday, February 10, 2018
in the Student Center at Polk State College. Results of the
local competition are not yet known, as the competition
takes place after the submission date for this publication.
Based on the outcome of the local competition, the
contestants will become eligible for the Southeastern
Regional Competition. The Regionals will be held at
the Double Tree by Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore on
Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 9am-1pm. The winner of the
regional competition earns the opportunity to compete
at the national level. The national competition will be
held in July 2018 during the 99th Annual NANM National
