3.2. Training conducted by the Unisa Library
3.2.1. Collaboration with publishers
In 2019, one of the Library’s operational projects was to arrange vendor-provided database training to the staff of the various regions. Four database training workshops were successfully delivered to all Regions and branch libraries to upskill the library staff and improve the usage of the e-resources. This training covered highly used e-resources across regional libraries, i.e. EBSCOhost, SABINET’s legal databases, LexisNexis and Westlaw. A
total of 150 Unisa Librarians, who are on the frontline when it comes to delivering information literacy training to clients, received this training. This will enhance the quality of training offered to clients at both regional and branch libraries. The impact of this is skilled and knowledgeable library trainers who will empower clients to be self-suf cient and optimally use the many library e-resources available to them.
3.2.2. Training sessions for Library clients
Unisa students need all the support they can get to be able to navigate the Library and to use the different information resources key to their studies. The Library conducts training sessions to equip students with the skills they need to use the library resources and be independent lifelong learners. Library training sessions are scheduled at the beginning of each semester to support students in their learning journey. Between January and March 2019, the Library held training sessions at the Wild Coast Centre, Richards Bay, Durban and Newcastle. In September 2019, the second semester training sessions were held in Richards Bay, Newcastle and Pietermaritzburg. The Unisa Library successfully trained over 5000 Unisa clients during 2019.
