4.2.2. Develop relationships with postgraduate students
The Personal Librarians developed relationships with new Masters and Doctoral students through letters of introduction after registration which includes brochures on how to use Library services and electronic resources (claiming mylife e-mail account and myUnisa password guidelines) also information about plagiarism.
To enhance scholarship, reputation and ensure optimal use of the Library’s comprehensive collections in the various formats and services on offer, Personal Librarians supported regional training organised by Graduate Studies for Honours, Master’s and Doctoral candidates to ideally become regular, independent, optimal library users. The training was held in George, Middleburg, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Durban, and Ethiopia.
The subject-speci c training was also done in small to large groups at college and departmental Masters and Doctoral workshops, personal 1 on1 training, online training (using Of ce 365 Microsoft Teams). Training content covers the nding and use of library resources relevant to their research across disciplines. Personal Librarians also encouraged postgraduates’ candidates to use reference management tools (Mendeley or RefWorks) independently, and assist postgraduates’ candidates with down-loading, setting up & the use of these reference tools.
Personal Librarians regularly and upon request conduct subject-speci c searches related to the research of academics and postgraduate candidates in their respective departments. They also assist researchers with references and information for a range of activities including research, scienti c publications and presentations as well as tuition material. The clients are also encouraged to use the alert services of library databases, and assist with the setting up such alert services
Client training sessions are evaluated annually, and during 2019 this is what clients had to say about the 2019 training sessions:
• The majority (88%) rated the content of the training as “just right” for them.
• 98% of clients said their expectations of the training were met.
• The three top-rated sessions were: Mendeley, Library Training and M & D.
