1.2. Department of Library and Information Services Mission
The Department of Library and Information Services supports Open Distance Learning by:
• Providing access to information in support of teaching, learning and research by optimising appropriate technology, and by developing and preserving library collections.
1.3. 2019 Department Operational Objectives
The strategic intent of the Department of Library and Information Services is guided by the Unisa 2016 - 2030 Strategic Plan and all policies and charters of the University. In the spirit of the vision of the University, the Department is committed to supporting the University in the achievement of its vision, mission and goals, responding to internal and external strategic agenda, and attaining the objectives and strategic goals. For 2019, the Department of Library and Information Services aligns its strategic and operational objectives to with those of the University. All targets for 2019 were aligned to these strategic and operational objectives:
Strategic objectives 2019:
• 90% Usage of Library Resources
• 3 000 000 Searches searches by users using subscribed databases, UnisaIR, OERs • 600 H-indexes provided to Colleges
• 5 Library Partnerships
Departmental operational objectives 2019:
• To provide services and information including resources related to ODL research
• To facilitate access to relevant content and training for researchers to advance ODL research • Promote access, and ensure document delivery across regions, Colleges and Partner libraries • To expand access to libraries in support of learning through partnerships
• Manage OER, UnisaIR, Open Access, digitisation and research data curation
• To provide research support to academics and researchers
• Library comply with applicable governance provisions
• Ensure sustainable provision of library services
• Inventory control of Unisa Library collection
• Ensure sound governance, risk and compliance
• Long term preservation of digital content
