Education of youth has always been a primary focus of the Chapter.
The Chapter’s leadership development initiatives, educational
enrichment and guidance programs, tutorials, dissemination of
reading materials and scholarship awards have helped thousands of
youth improve their learning potential and skills. To enhance
academic success, giving, and volunteer opportunities, in 1984
Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter established its nonprofit arm, the
Educational and Charitable Foundation, later named the Ivy
Educational and Charitable Foundation of Houston (“IEACF”)—its
primary repository for many charitable contributions and student
scholarships. One of many esteemed honors, Alpha Kappa Omega
Chapter was chosen as a regional site for the Ivy Reading Academy,
a well-funded program co-sponsored by the national body and the
U.S. Department of Education. In 2018, thanks to a $16,000 Dow
Chemical Company grant award, the IEACF was able to fund the
SM
Chapter’s ASCEND Summit of entrepreneurship, college
readiness, finance, and STEM-related activities and workshops for
149 area high school students at the historic Jack Yates High School
in Houston. Adhering to the Sorority’s goal of “maintaining a
progressive interest in college life”, the Chapter mentors and
provides oversight for three Houston area undergraduate chapters:
Gamma Psi (Texas Southern University); Epsilon Lambda
(University of Houston-Central); and, Omicron Gamma (University of
Houston–Downtown). Through innovative programming and
collaborative partnerships, Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter has
enriched, and continues to impact lives for the better.
