                     INNOVATION

Memory Care Residents Create ArtPrize Installation
As featured on Maranda from WOTV-Samaritas Senior Living Grand Rapids creates
ArtPrize installation featured at Park Church.

Samaritas Senior Living in Grand Rapids has many wonderful projects throughout the year, which
recently included a very special one for ArtPrize. Dayna Roe, the director of our Memory Care
program, created, with the residents, an ability and interest-based program that they worked on all
summer. Their intent and finished project, raised garden beds, represents adults with dementia
and their care partners. The artists are from various backgrounds who came together to make a
difference in the lives of others through this project. Together, through dedicated and skilled work,
they hope to make a difference in the care that they provide on an individual, community, and
       global scale.

The beautiful raised bed planters, that spell out I
AM, are full of vibrant Samaritas purple petunias.
The installation is ability neutral allowing for
residents to have access to the plants while
kneeling, standing, or using a wheelchair or
                                                   walker.

“We just stood with the residents and I asked
them questions. I said, tell me what you’re capable
of, they said, I can cook, I can bake. I can forgive, I can bless, I can love, and I
think their answers were so profound because they were so social in nature,” said Roe.

Roe noted that nothing was said about a disability or a diagnosis. “We took that positive messaging,
turned it into a piece of art, something that's growing and living and we were really moved by it and
we thought, well, this needs to be our message to the community.”

       beautiful piece.
