sutures
Simple Interrupted
· Use nonabsorbable suture material (Nylon, Prolene, Ethilon).
· Make sure that a “dead space” will not be created and that there will not be too much tension on the closure.
Vertical Mattress
· Use nonabsorbable suture material (Nylon, Prolene, Ethilon). Used for wounds that are too deep for simple interrupted and not deep enough for interrupted absorbable. Called “far far- near-near stitch”.
· The rst throw is wide and deep, followed by a throw that enters the same side of the wound where the last exited.
· The second throw is perpendicular and closer to the wound than the rst stitch. Tie on the same side the stitch was started on.
Horizontal Mattress
· Use nonabsorbable suture material (Nylon, Prolene, Ethilon).
· Used for wounds with a lot of tension.
· The rst throw is relatively wide (5 mm-1 cm) and deep from wound edge. Suture
passes deep to opposite side and exits
the skin equidistant from the wound.
· Enter the skin on the same side
horizontal to wound and throw another relatively wide and deep stitch back
to opposite side and tie. Start,
nish, and tie on the same side.
