management illustrates the payo s smart use of “big data” can provide. “Converting all of our facilities over to Cerner’s integrated IT platform moves us out of separate silos,” notes McLaren CEO Phil Incarnati. “That makes it a lot easier for collections and generating nancial statements.”
This suggests the many ways a coordinated IT system will improve e ciency and revenues throughout McLaren Health Care. Mastering those 72,000 ICD-10 codes will be one quick win. “Our IT investments will support the new [ICD-10] codes — that will improve operations right out of the box,” says Strachan. Savings will also add up when
all billings from throughout the McLaren system for a patient are funneled through a single claim procedure. There is less duplication, fewer oversights, and it becomes much easier for reimbursement sta to ght back on denials.
The Cerner switchover also creates fresh opportunities to compile and analyze the big data that such an enormous system as McLaren generates. Improving quality, cutting costs, tracking care trends, and spotting new e ciencies are all bene ts of wisely crunching
these numbers. But, before the consolidation, “there were so many entry points and qualities you needed a gymnast to pull all the data together,” observes Strachan. Once the system goes fully online, a data analysis “that may have taken four weeks to get the data points can be done in days.” The information will be more consistent and timely as well.
One area where this data transition will prove most valuable is in managing the logistics of running a massive health care system. Imagine yourself responsible for researching, selecting, negotiating and buying millions of gauze bandages each year. And that’s only step one. You must also divide this stock among dozens of locations, assuring that there will be just the right number available to meet
