I have owned several Porsches over the years. Currently, I drive a Porsche Macan S in graphite Miami blue. It is perfect for daily driving, and for someone who was hijacked five years ago I feel completely safe driving around Johannesburg in it.
I first discovered Porsche about 16 years ago when I started dating Albert Du Bois, however, I think my true passion for the
vehicle started
in earnest with
the excitement of
track days, speed-
ing around the
track in my 1989
Carrera 3.2 Targa -
I was hooked!
Porsche is the
only brand of racing car that you can drive as your daily car AND take on the track. I especially love the iconic
42 year-end function
classic Porsches. Driving in an air-cool car feels like a proper drive. Classic cars have personalities of their own.
If you don’t take them out for a while, they take time to warm up again. Some switches initially refuse to work, and eventually, it just starts working again (like an athlete warming up). At one
Porsche Parade, I was driving my Porsche Carrera 911 3.2, and it refused to start whenever I was on my own. However, as soon as a lot of people were watching, it would
start with no problem at all. Then, the minute we were alone again it would refuse to start!
While everyday driving in a Porsche is always mem- orable, one of the best experiences
I had was at Zwartkops Raceway on Father’s Day.
We had volunteered to take some dads around the track to experience Por- sches. When it was my turn, I could see
the gentleman was looking very disappointed with having been assigned a woman driver.
Whist we were driving, another Porsche blew air-coolant all over the track and my car. Needless to say, we started spinning. With each spin, I could see the approaching Porsches becoming bigger and bigger. Due to my driver training, I managed to bring us to a perfect stop. The gentleman’s eyes were rather big, but he managed to stutter: “Never again will I underestimate a woman driver!”
I would still love to own a Porsche 356 in British racing green colours as an investment,. The nostalgia associated with these erstwhile iconic Porsches plays a big part in my attachment to the Porsche brand.
The community of Porsche Club enthusiasts are near to my heart, and
I have met some wonderful people. Friendships that were formed during 2009 are still going strong and interacting with like-minded Porsche enthusiasts unquestionably contributed to my love for all things Porsche.
