Greetings!

I am proud to join the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan in
welcoming you to the 38th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration. This year’s
theme, “Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock
of brotherhood.” encourages everyone in to lift our community and work towards justice for all.

I love attending this event and I am so happy that we are able to gather in person this year. You
can always feel the power and the passion in the room, and I am so happy to join all of you again
here. Thank you to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan for your work
in bringing together this wonderful event for 2023.

On behalf of the City of Lansing, it is a distinct privilege to welcome this year’s guest speaker,
an attorney who defined the early Civil Rights Movement, Mr. Fred Gray. We are honored to
have him with us today.

Thank you all for joining us today for this incredible event. It is imperative that we take time to
properly honor Dr. King and his contributions, especially in times like these, and we pray that
we may be graced with the intangible qualities he possessed that helped change society. Doctor
King’s legacy is fully embodied in his own words, “…unarmed truth and unconditional love will
have the final word.”
