Why does the OJT Program exist?
Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) implements a
contractor-based OJT Program designed to be used by
contractors to increase the participation of minorities, women,
and disadvantaged persons in the construction skilled-trades on
MDOT federal-aid construction projects.
Program Goals
x Monitor and assist Contractors as they recruit minorities, women and disadvantaged
persons to the OJT program.
x Encourage Contractors to retain trainees beyond program completion.
x Ensure consistency in the content and quality of the training provided.
x Increase flexibility for Contractors’ in assigning trainees to various projects.
Eligibility Requirements for Trainees
x Desires a career in the construction industry.
x Insufficient skilled-trades experience in the training program in which he/she is to be
placed.
x Currently not seeking a college degree or be on summer leave/vacation from a college
program.
x Is independent of the owner(s) and/or officer(s) of the contractor.

x Carpenter x Cement Mason
x Construction Craft Laborer x Equipment Operator
x Ironworker (Structural/Reinforcing) x Painter
x Bituminous Testing x Electrical
x and many others
OJT Program Hours
The OJT program course length range from 1,800 hours to 8,000 hours depending on area of
skilled-trades training.
